I have one rule I won’t break as a teacher: I don’t move on until I’ve heard multiple students explain their thinking—and not just the confident ones. If only two students can explain why a strategy works, the learning isn’t solid yet, even if the lesson is “done.” Real understanding comes from listening, observing, and using authentic student thinking as data. I use Building Thinking Classrooms, so my students are up at whiteboards and thinking not flipping through a math textbook The problem? Textbooks are often outside students’ Zone of Proximal Development or inaccessible for struggling readers. So here’s my quick teacher hack: ChatGPT. I prompt it to generate math problems that increase in difficulty and I even theme them (Fortnite, holidays, you name it). Biography Maya Angelou’s life was a testament to resilience and the power of the voice. After a traumatic childhood in the Jim Crow South—during which she went mute for five years—she reclaimed her voice to become a global figure in literature and civil rights. She worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, serving as the Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Her formal teaching career flourished later in life. In 1982, she was named the first Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, a position she held for over 30 years. She taught a wide variety of subjects, including philosophy, ethics, theology, science, and theater.
